Waste Management Collective Bargaining Agreement

Teamsters Local 174 & 231 members made history today when a group of 450 waste management employees in King and Skagit County voted for the first time to ratify an agreement, which covers them all. The agreement is historic not only in its scope, as it brings together many separated treaties into one, but also historically in its achievements both in language and in the economy. Agreement of 450 workers brings together 11 contracts and a group of mechanics reorganized in a 5-year agreement On the economic side, the agreement provides for record wage increases that will immediately increase wages by more than 10% for some groups – and in one case by almost 14%.

    It also guarantees five years of full maintenance of benefits for all waste management employees in the best available team medical plan and adds to the pension contribution of more than 2 $US per hour on the five-year contract. The agreement adds two additional floating holidays and contains improvements to leave, sick leave, funeral leave, daily benefits and more worker-friendly language that regulates discipline for minor accidents and out-of-vehicle incidents. “There is no doubt that this contract is a historic achievement that will improve working conditions for all of our waste management members,” said Patty Warren, Director of Negotiations at Local 174. “We started with the language of the strongest of existing contracts, and then we built the entire agreement on that basis, which led to over 175 improvements to the final product…
