Life has never been the same for Jake Zyrus, formerly known as Charice Pempengco who was formerly seen on Glee and a child-singing search, after coming out as a transgender. He has started creating a buzz over traditional and modern media, especially the internet, after modifying his screen name. As a matter of fact, everything happened so fast that almost every entertainment site and paper picked up on the news. According to Zyrus, he did not plan to create such a fuss.
Initially, he planned on changing his usernames on most social networking websites. He was surprised when he saw everyone almost picking everything up. He even added that “I guess this is the perfect time.” Zyrus mentioned in time of Pride Month. For him, the occurrences unfolded in the right time and in the right place. Most netizens in various social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram and Twitter expressed their support. A video where he was covering Pyramid, as sang by Charice Pempengco with Iyaz, even went viral.
Surprised was an understatement to describe how Zyrus felt on his coming out. He was overwhelmed with how his fans were accepting the fans. The moment he came out through his Instagram and Twitter account, many got interested with his story. As a matter of fact, this led to him being interviewed by USA Today. Through such, he was able to share his journey. His family learned about the change the same time the fans learned about it too.
Up to a New Journey
It has indeed become a different path for Jake now. The announcement of his new identity, his new name, does not mean he was erasing Charice though. On an interview done by Inquirer, Jake said it was more of letting the young woman go and giving a chance for a new person to finally come along – which in this sense, is Jake Zyrus.
The journey is just beginning for him. This is only the dtart of his steps. It is still a long way to go for Zyrus as a transman.
